Within these pages lives a love story about two adventurous "loners"... Michael Ferris and Lynn Ann White. By a fateful chance encounter they form a twosome (threesome if one counts their big dog Malik) that nurtures triumph and recovery from unexpected tragedy.

And it is a tale of an injured wolf which experiences the identical feelings and emotions of the main characters. Man and wolf mirror each other as they face the same life essences... but for the wolf there would be no recovery.

Suitable and captivating for all age groups, the life lessons encountered within the book will persist long after the story has been read.

CRIP eBook T J Dunn

Crip is a cool story full of "I can see" what's happening here throughout the book. Great insight into some types of lifestyles (society types, the tightness of wilderness types) and a wonderful love story to boot. Great for animal advocates for sure!
I'm going to read it again.

CRIP eBook T J Dunn Reviews

Gripping and enlightening. The duality of this story is remarkable and will provide interest to a wide range of readers. On the surface, this is a fun, exciting and sometimes scary adventure that all age groups can enjoy. For deeper thinkers, the author provides many subtle lessons that can be learned regarding the nature of man, and man's role in nature.

Review by Fred James

For an author’s first book CRIP is a charming, full blown love story and adventure set in Alaska, written by a man who blends real places with fictitious characters. TJ Dunn gives his reader a charming story from the first page. As he develops his main character Mike Ferris, we get humor, love, fear, disaster and even philosophical discussions effortlessly blended with the plot.

Mike Ferris is an athlete, a wood carver, a dog musher and a lover of the Alaskan outdoors. He meets a lovely woman, Ann, under less than optimal conditions and gradually they recognize in each other kindred spirits. The novel develops as the twosome discuss their love, what happens to people when they die, do animals feel pain differently than humans and even a debate on the ethics of trapping animals.

Between chapters Dunn inserts short quotes from famous writers and thinkers Poe, Hammarskjold, Mandela, Toth, Bentham, Ghandi and the Bible. One example “The question is not ’Can they reason?’ nor ‘Can they talk?’ but ‘Can they suffer?” Jeremy Bentham. These quotes, help move the novel along because CRIP has the action and philosophical issues suavely blended so that the reader is asking himself questions and starting to analyze these issues along with the main characters. This happy seamless blend, is, in part, what makes this first novel so compelling. The reader wants to know the characters better and cheers for them as Mike finds himself in great danger.

This is a book written for adults but skillfully includes juveniles into its scope by never preaching and, given that today’s literature and media are rife with disgusting scenes and foul words on a regular basis, there are no foul words used in the whole book, no detailed, physical sex, no bar fights, no gun play but there is plenty of action and it’s described in clear prose but without graphic, extraneous detail. It’s a G-rated book that completely satisfies.

Finally in addition to the colorful writing there are numerous black and white drawings which complement the words, a bucolic scene of a man mushing his dogs down the trail, with the lead dog fairly jumping with happiness; another drawing of a log cabin in the woods with a man and woman standing in front facing the cabin. And there are several sketches of maps of Alaska and the Lower Forty-Eight.

What does CRIP stand for? Is it an acronym? Does it stand for a person or an action? I wondered about this all through the novel and toward the end the meaning was revealed. I loved it and heartily endorse CRIP for all ages.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dunn’s thought provoking, philosophical descriptions of the essence of man and animal. Highly recommend “Crip” to the young adult
