This is the story of a man's rise from poverty to eventual relative affluence and spans the period from th 1920s and the Great Depression to the commencement of World War II, during the 6 years of war, and the post-war years, up to the present time.
The first part of the story describes how the author was born in 1928 in Poplar - which is in the heart of the Docklands - in a period which can only be described as very hard time. His parents were poor and brought up their four surviving children in just two rooms on the upper floor of a Victorian terraced house during the early 1930s and there they ate and slept. Later they were able to take over other rooms in the house and so live a little more comfortably. The author describes his upbringing with cheerful good humour and with a clarity which avoids gratuitous sentimentality. His description of his relationship with his parents is touching.

This is not the David Mitchell of 'Cloud Atlas' fame. This David Mitchell has written a very chatty pleasant autobiography that covers the period from the mid 1930's to the mid 1960's (there is a second volume which I have not yet read). You almost feel like you are sitting in a pub listening to him. A good read, especially if you have been alive long enough to remember the 50's.One note: the Kindel version I downloaded was transcribed rather badly. Twice I encountered duplication of large sections of text and there were numerous occassions where a word was either totally wrong or so badly spaced or mispelled that you had to do a bit of analysis to try and get the meaning of the sentence.

According to multiple reviews on 's UK site this is not the same David Mitchell as wrote Ghost Written, Black Swan Green etc. A pity cannot share the reviews or find another way to make this clear.
This could be my Dad's story - except he was never wealthy. The 'author' tells a tale as if he were actually my Dad. I can recall listening to tales of school and skylarking from him and was able to marvel and be baffled by the strange ways of the old folk.
The writer is not to be confused with the more well known David Mitchell. I made this mistake by buying the book!
